| The 'USERS'
or 'U'
command allows you to see who else is connected to the node at the same
time.
This is handy if you wish to invite others in your area into a conversation using the TALK mode. |

One of the more exciting features a TheNet node provides is the node chat room known as the 'Talk Conference'.
|
![]() |
| The 'TALK'
command allows those connected to the node to talk amongst each other in
a single 'chat room' style conference.
When connected to the node issue the 't' command to enter the talk conference and then you can communicate with the other stations that are similarly in the talk conference. Any text that you send is sent to all the other users in the talk conference and preceded by your callsign-- very much like an internet chat room. To exit the talk conference issue the /ex command (as it reminds you on your entry to the talk conference mode) If you wish to invite others connected to the node into the talk conference there is instructions on how to do that in the official TheNet userguide [or the userguide.txt version] which I strongly advise you to download and print out.
TCP/IP routing is another feature that is provided by TheNet nodes. This is the very same protocol that is used on the internet and in most computer networks, and it's use amongst ham radio operators can be a wonderful learning experience and a great tool in exploring data communications. Describing TCP/IP networking over ham packet radio is way beyond the scope of this webpage, but it's a mode that has educational benefits for those that use it far exceeding what one might normally expect from time spent 'playing radio'.
I hope this brief intro into making use of a TheNet node was informative and beneficial. 73 KF8KK
